A multi-resolution approach to hydraulic fracture simulation

Abstract We present a multi-resolution approach for constructing model-based simulations of hydraulic fracturing, wherein flow through porous media is coupled with fluid-driven fracture. The consists hybrid scheme that couples discrete crack representation in global domain to phase-field local subdomain near the tip. addresses issues such as computational expense accurate fracture and difficulties associated reconstructing apertures from diffuse representations. In domain, system equations displacements pressures considered. geometry assumed be fixed displacement field enriched discontinuous functions. Around tips subdomains, sub-problems are instantiated on fly propagate fractures arbitrary, mesh independent directions. governing fields domains approximated using combination finite-volume finite element discretizations. efficacy method illustrated various benchmark problems well new study growth around stiff inclusion.
